Bring-your-own-key AI chatbot for WordPress

SleekAI is a WordPress chatbot that uses your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter. The plugin calls the provider directly, with no SleekAI server in the middle and no per-token markup.

What bring-your-own-key actually means

Bring-your-own-key (BYOK) is a phrase a lot of chatbot vendors use, but most use it to mean you can paste your OpenAI key into their dashboard and they will use it for you. The vendor still proxies the request through their server, still logs your prompts, still applies their own rate limits, and often still charges a per-chat fee on top of the model cost. The key is yours in name only.

SleekAI's BYOK is literal. The chat request goes from the visitor's browser to your WordPress server, where SleekAI assembles the system prompt and calls the provider API directly with your key. No SleekAI hosted service touches the request. No SleekAI account is even required to use the chatbot. The plugin reads your key from wp_options, signs the outbound HTTPS call to api.openai.com or api.anthropic.com or wherever, and the reply streams back to the widget. SleekAI's only ongoing role is the WordPress code that runs in your install.

The practical impact is on cost, data control, and provider flexibility. Cost: you pay provider list prices, not a marked-up reseller rate. Data control: prompts and replies pass through your server and the provider's server, nothing else. Provider flexibility: you can hold keys for six providers in parallel and pick which one each chatbot uses, switching with a dropdown when prices or capabilities change. None of this is exotic, but it does not survive when a vendor needs a profit margin on every token.

Workflow

How bring-your-own-key works in SleekAI

1

Create keys at your providers

Generate API keys at platform.openai.com, console.anthropic.com, aistudio.google.com, console.x.ai, platform.deepseek.com, or openrouter.ai. You can add as few or as many as you want, no minimum, no exclusivity.
2

Paste keys into SleekAI

Open SleekAI Providers in the WordPress admin and paste each key into its provider slot. SleekAI stores them in wp_options with autoload off, never sends them to a SleekAI server, and uses them only when calling the matching API.
3

Pick provider per chatbot

In each chatbot's settings, pick a provider and a model from the dropdowns. Under multibot, the support bot can run on GPT-4o-mini and the sales bot on Claude Sonnet 4 on the same page, each with its own log and its own token meter.
4

Watch billing on the provider dashboards

Token usage shows up on your OpenAI or Anthropic billing page in near real time. SleekAI logs the same numbers in sleek_ai_logs so you can reconcile both sides. No SleekAI subscription scales with chat volume.

Comparison

Vendor BYOK vs SleekAI true BYOK

Generic chatbot

  • Proxies your prompts through their server even when you paste a key
  • Charges a per-chat or per-message fee on top of the model cost
  • Locks you to one provider per workspace, no per-bot mixing
  • Logs your conversations in their dashboard with no opt-out
  • Adds rate limits beyond what your provider key already enforces

SleekAI chatbot

  • Provider API calls go from your WordPress server, not a SleekAI service
  • No SleekAI account or signup needed to run the chatbot
  • Hold keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter at once
  • Pick provider, model, and key per chatbot under multibot
  • Conversation logs and tokens stored in sleek_ai_logs in your DB

Features

What SleekAI gives you for Bring-Your-Own-Key Chatbot

Six providers, one plugin

Hold API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, xAI, DeepSeek, and OpenRouter in parallel. Pick which provider and model each chatbot uses from a dropdown. Switch any time, no rewiring.

Direct API calls only

Outbound HTTPS goes from your WordPress server straight to the provider endpoint. No SleekAI hosted service in the middle. Audit it with a network monitor or your server access log if you need to confirm.

Pay provider list prices

Your bill comes from OpenAI, Anthropic, or whichever provider you picked. No markup, no per-chat fee, no SleekAI subscription tied to usage. SleekAI sells a flat plugin license, not metered tokens.

Use cases

Where true BYOK matters most

High-volume sites

At 10k chats a month, reseller markup of 3-5x on tokens adds up to hundreds of dollars. Direct provider billing keeps that money inside the site's budget.

Privacy-sensitive workloads

Healthcare, legal, and finance sites that audit data flow gain a simpler picture: visitor browser, WordPress server, provider API. No fourth party to vet.

Multi-provider strategies

Agencies running 20 sites pick the cheapest provider per workload, switch when prices change, and never untangle their data from a vendor lock-in.

The bigger picture

Why true BYOK is the durable architecture

The chatbot industry has had three distinct pricing eras in three years. In 2023 the answer was a flat monthly SaaS fee plus a per-message charge, often 2 to 10 cents per chat. In 2024 the vendors started passing through model costs at 3 to 5x markup, hidden inside credits.

In 2025 the leading providers shipped models cheap enough that the markup is the dominant line item rather than the model cost. By 2026, models will likely get cheaper still, the markup percentage will get harder to defend, and any site locked into reseller pricing will be paying for a service that has lost its economic justification. The architecture that does not age is bring-your-own-key, done literally.

The provider invoice is the provider invoice. The chatbot software is a fixed one-time or annual cost. The data wiring is local to the WordPress install.

Migration to a new provider is a dropdown change. None of those choices age, because none of them depend on a market condition that might shift. SleekAI is built so that the only ongoing cost that scales with chat volume is the token bill from the provider you picked.

That bill is a direct relationship with the model maker. SleekAI does not see it, mark it up, or take a cut. The plugin's economics are flat by design.

Whether the underlying model market re-prices itself another 10x in 2027, your chatbot keeps working and your bill tracks reality.

Questions

Common questions about SleekAI for Bring-Your-Own-Key Chatbot

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio (Gemini), xAI (Grok), DeepSeek, and OpenRouter as a meta-provider that covers Mistral, Llama, Qwen, Cohere, and roughly 200 other models. All speak through their native APIs except OpenRouter which itself aggregates many providers behind one key.

In wp_options, the standard WordPress options table, with the option_autoload flag turned off so they are not loaded on every page. The plugin reads them only when calling the provider. They are not synced anywhere outside your database. Treat them like any other plugin secret and follow the WordPress hardening basics.

No. The plugin activates with a license key for updates, but the chatbot itself does not require a SleekAI cloud account or any signup. The chat traffic never touches a SleekAI server. The license check is a once-per-week ping to validate the install, nothing else.

Yes, through OpenRouter or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. SleekAI lets you set a custom base URL per provider, so a self-hosted Llama or Qwen instance with an OpenAI-shape API drops in cleanly. The variable mapper and display conditions work the same way regardless of which endpoint serves the chat.

Logs live in sleek_ai_logs on your WordPress database. You can disable logging per chatbot, redact specific fields before storage, or set automatic deletion after N days from the SleekAI settings. Nothing logs externally. The provider's own data retention policy applies to whatever they see, which is just the chat completion request.

SleekAI applies an optional per-IP rate limit and a per-page-load throttle to prevent abuse on public pages. Both are configurable. Beyond those, the only limits are your provider's tier (OpenAI tokens-per-minute, Anthropic concurrent requests, etc). SleekAI never adds a SaaS-style monthly cap on top.

Flat annual license, not metered. The license covers the plugin and updates, regardless of how many chats your site handles. So 100 chats a month and 100,000 chats a month cost the same for SleekAI. Your only variable cost is whatever the provider charges per token, which is exactly your provider invoice.

If your model speaks the OpenAI chat-completion API, yes. Set up the custom-provider endpoint in SleekAI Providers, point it at your inference server's URL, pass whatever auth header the server expects. Local Ollama on a private network, a hosted Hugging Face Inference endpoint, or a custom vLLM deployment all work.
